IELTS WRITING TASK 2 ESSAY CAMBRIDGE BOOK 9 TEST 1

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children). To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Sample Answer: 254 words

There are some who believe that requiring students to undertake unpaid work would be beneficial for society as a whole and would teach students valuable life lessons. Others argue that such a measure would be unduly burdensome on students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and unpaid work should be voluntary. In my opinion, there should be some form of mandatory community service requirement in high school.

First, it is undeniable that engaging in voluntary work is an important part of developing a sense of social responsibility and contributing to the greater good. Being involved in community service allows students to learn more about the issues facing their local community and develop skills such as communication and teamwork. Furthermore, in many cases, the activities that students undertake during their community service can be seen to directly benefit those in need, such as teaching sports to children in disadvantaged areas or helping to improve the environment.

Moreover, mandatory community service can be a great way to foster collaboration and create a stronger sense of community between students of different backgrounds. It can also help to develop a greater appreciation for the value of volunteer work and the importance of giving back to one’s community. By engaging in meaningful activities that have a positive impact on society, students can learn the importance of civic responsibility and the power of collective action.

In conclusion, I believe that volunteering should be a requirement in high school so all students can benefit from the experience.
