IELTS WRITING TASK 1 LETTER - INFORMAL REPLY TO A FRIEND ABOUT IELTS STUDY

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

An English-speaking friend has written to you to ask you how your IELTS

studies are going. Write a letter telling your friend how you are preparing for the test.

In your letter:

  • say what progress you are making

  • explain how you are preparing for the test

  • say which section you are finding the most difficult

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear...,

SAMPLE ANSWER: 160 words - Band 6.0 to 6.5

This is an answer written by one of my students, Marco from Brazil. He wrote this answer in class while we were practicing in under 20 minutes.

Dear Johnny,

How are you? I hope you are doing well.

As you know, I am going to have my IELTS test very soon and I'm very nervous to be honest. I am writing in reply to your last letter regarding my progress.

I recently started this IELTS course, it is a preparation course but it has a different method. I am doing very well, I have done some samples of writing which are based on the real test, it is very realistic. Basically, the preparation consists of practicing all bands as you have on the real test. I am completing between four or five essays weekly and three letters as a preparation. I hope it will give me a solid base to do great in my test.

Ever since I left school, I haven't been reading or writing very often. So I am struggling a little bit on these two subjects, but I reckon if I go harder on them I will be fine. Wish me luck.

Lots of love,

Marco
