IELTS WRITING TASK 1 LETTER - FORMAL STRUCTURE

Updated: Jan 20, 2020

TOP TIPS:

1. Spend three or four minutes planning what you want to write.

2. Write Dear Sir or Madam (do not change it to Dear Sir / Dear Madam)

3. Make sure the paragraphs are equal in size and number of words.

4. Spend four minutes on each of the main paragraphs.

5. Do not use contractions (I'm, can't, don't). Use I am, cannot, do not.

6. Use formal cohesive devices ( however, although, in addition).

7. Do not write 'I look forward to meeting you' if you are complaining.

8. Sign a formal letter with your full name.

9. Save some time at the end to read through your letter and correct any mistakes.

10. Do not add or change sentences at this point, it will break the flow of the letter.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Paragraph one - this is about the purpose of your letter. For example, I am writing to thank you for (use some of the language from the prompt, paraphrase as much as possible, do not copy).

Paragraph two - bullet point one - provide the information required in the bullet points for a better score in task achievement. Each paragraph should be about the same size and number of words as the others. Highlight the key features with relevant supporting details.

Paragraph three - bullet point two - provide the information required in the bullet points for a better score in task achievement. Each paragraph should be about the same size and number of words as the others. Highlight the key features with relevant supporting details.

Paragraph four - bullet point three - provide the information required in the bullet points for a better score in task achievement. Each paragraph should be about the same size and number of words as the others. Highlight the key features with relevant supporting details.

Thank you once again for (include details from prompt).

Yours faithfully,

Master English.
